You will find three different sizes of dishwasher available, and which you choose will have to depend upon the size of the available space you have to house it.

First there is the largest size... around 60 cm [24 inches] wide. This size model takes a full 12 place settings - so they are ideal family sized machines.

If you only have a narrower space available to house it, the next size down is the 45 cm [18 inches] wide model - these hold a very reasonable 8 or 9 full place settings - more than adequate in most cases. There is absolutely no loss of washing efficiency in these slimline machines.

Finally there are the small models which are designed to sit on your worktop - so if you have available worktop area, but no spare floor space... they are your only option. Even these wash 4 to 6 full place settings at a time.

'Energy Efficiency'... I have read reports that dishwashers use more energy, I have read reports which claim the exact opposite... and none of these reports were by manufacturers.

I guess, also, that everyone washes up in a different cycle and way. If you wash up every few minutes and use a lot of water, then maybe you use more water than a new appliance, which use a lot less water and have far better ratings, nearer to A+ than ever before.

As for best buys in each size category... well my favourite brand for most practical household electrical appliances had representatives in all three. Bosch nearly always come out top for reliability, and that is my main shopping criteria.

Choose, for a compact worktop sited model... Bosch SKT5102GB

For the 18" [45 cm] slimline model... Bosch SRS45E12GB

And for the full size model Bosch SGS65L12GB

Of our recommended suppliers, only one had access to all three of the above models... and they are a brilliant source... so I would recommend that you just go to... Be-direct and check them out.

I found the compact model under 'built-in compact' and I found both the slimline and full size models under 'freestanding full size'. There are various other Bosch models available... your best choice will be AAA rated appliances.

Of course, you may be able to have your old one collected when the new model is delivered if all else fails.

On the other hand, if you are new to dishwashers, here are a few tips...

• Make sure the dirtiest side of your crockery faces the centre.
• Don't bother to wash off your crockery by hand first.
• Scrape any left-over food into your bin, then if crockery is really dirty, use the rinse & hold programme.
• Place all the largest items at the back and sides of your dishwasher.

Always follow the manufacturers directions/instructions implicitly. Use only the recommended tablets. Some instructions may recommend extra salt, some may void your guarantee if you use particular products which they advise against.

When you first obtain your machine... read all the instructions... fully and carefully... even if it isn't your first dishwasher.
