Food Processor

A food processor will be a good buy... if you do a lot of cooking, need lots of vegetables chopped, breadcrumbs made, make mayonnaise and generally have loads of uses for one. Remember, many of the better ones come complete with citrus press, juicer, sometimes even a blender.

Two thoughts... will you have sufficient worktop room to keep it out and ready for use? Would a blender do all the jobs which you are considering a food processor for? Or maybe you need both, as blenders are superior when it comes to making a consistently smooth soup.

I have always considered a food processor to be of much more use in the kitchen than a big food mixer... a hand mixer is so much more versatile.

I think the next logical question is how much do you want to spend on it?

We have a vast range of prices, standards, reliability and ruggedness to consider within this category... and it is difficult to weigh one thing against the other. How much use your machine will be put to will affect which model you choose. I have read reviews where people have had two or three different cheap models break down on them in a short period of time... then they have bought one of the expensive models, with a long guarantee period and are truly delighted with it. But also bear in mind... it will not last forever... one of mine gave up because the connection and rubber round it perished [of course, they are sealed units]... other than that it had been reliable for years.

Maybe you already have a favourite brand... or have your eye on one particular model... in those cases all I can do is point you in the direction of a good, well priced, and reliable supplier.

If the above is not the case, perhaps it is best to mention some of the various reviews on different brands... then we can follow this up with details of what is actually available NOW, and include details of prices, best buys, and suppliers.

Reviews...[in alphabetical order]...

Braun... the Multisystem FP, the K3000, and the Combimix were reviewed. Comments include... fairly easy to use; powerful, versatile, easy to use; and looks good too.

Breville... the FP3 was called brilliant and was well liked. The FP7... I have read two reviews which said it had plenty of safety features, good rubber safety feet, good storage for attachments, easy to clean, versatile, easy to use, safe. I have also read one review which said more or less the exact opposite!

Kenwood... FP570 and FP690. Comments include... quick, simple, easy to clean and use, small and compact, wide range of attachments. Loads of features and accessories, reasonably easy to clean, easiest to use.

Magimix... 5100 and Compact Automatic 3100. Comments include... 5100 comes with 5 year guarantee, reliable, heavy duty, excellent accessories... best washed by hand. 3100 has extra small bowl for small quantities, easy to use, clear instructions.

Morphy Richards 48900 SS... compact, stylish, cheap, 2 year guarantee.

What is the available choice NOW?

Littlewoods Home Shopping stock a Kenwood food processor... FP530 at £75... I have found no reviews or comparisons regarding this machine, so sorry, but you will have to take the write-up at face value if you decide to buy.

now have an extensive selection of reasonably priced goods available online. Check out those online prices NOW. [I saved over £21 by buying online, on an item which cost less than £100 in-store.]

24-7 Electrical have a variety of Kenwood food processors, though none of the reviewed or recommended models... but they are always amongst the most reasonably priced suppliers.

The Co-op Electrical Shop has a brilliant offer on at present... I don't know how long it will last!

The offer is on the Kenwood FP698 which is a 900 watt food processor, with blender, citrus press, juice extractor, pulse control and loads more features and attachments. It is being sold at £69.99, which, I know, is £30 below other on-line suppliers.

They also stock the Breville FP7... see reviews above... a 700 watt food processor, with blender, citrus press and pulse control... slightly more pricey than the Kenwood is at present.

Lastly we have Argos where there is the biggest choice... with machines varying in price from £16.99 up to £147.

If you will use your food processor heavily then you could probably do no better than make a quick order on-line to collect from your local Argos ... for the top of the range Magimix Compact Automatic 3100 which is a best buy and highly recommended. It comes with a safe blade storage box, has pulse function... Note... the 12 year motor, and 3 year parts and labour guarantee! At £147 you will have to weigh up whether you will get that amount of usage out of it... if so, go for it.

For those who wouldn't get quite so much use out of their food processor... what I would go for is the Kenwood FP698 from the Co-op, whilst it is still at the same bargain price!
