Radio

Digital [DAB] and Analogue

Bearing in mind that on average we listen to radio just as much as we watch television, it is no surprise that manufacturers are bringing new technology on stream, and improving our old analogue radios in as many respects as they are able.

Whether you are looking to upgrade your old appliance, replace a broken down machine, or branch out into the new digital broadcasting choices... there are a few points to clear up, and a few general pointers to consider.

• Digital [DAB] does not guarantee you better quality sound.

• One of our top two analogue radios will give far superior sound to a
    poor quality digital.

• DAB gives a far greater choice of stations.

• Another plus is that digital is far easier to use and tune.

• But batteries have a MUCH shorter life in a digital machine.

• Can you get digital in your part of the country?

DAB - Digital

Digital offers loads more stations, add to this the fact that the sets are just so much easier to use, not only do they do automatic searching, but also the names of the stations are shown on the display.

Are you more concerned about whether or not you can receive radio 1? Let me put your mind at rest... BBC radio one, radio 2, and 3 and 4 are now broadcast in digital... several digital only stations are coming on stream, added to this many new commercial stations are springing up. Plus, always remember that the best digitals can also access FM, so when you are out of range of digital broadcasting, you can still get your favourite analogue programmes.

One of our recommendations is mains only, but our best buy digital can be used on both mains and battery... remember that the batteries won't last long!

Now to our recommendations and which of our favourite suppliers stock them and give best offers... first let me mention the actual radios...

Pure Evoke - 2 ... which is the mains and battery version, a truly     brilliant best buy.
Pure Evoke - 1xt ... the mains only version

You can find both radios at 24-7 Electrical... this store offers the cheapest product prices at £76.26 for the Pure Evoke 1xt and £116.01 for the Pure Evoke 2.

You will also find both radios at Argos and Tesco... you will find they are similarly priced, so your choice! Collect from your local Argos, free delivery from Tesco, I imagine.

The cheaper Pure Evoke - 1xt - can also be found at the Co-op Electrical Shop priced around the £80 mark.

As in all cases, check delivery costs, VAT, and any special offers which may be available when you make your order.

At  you can obtain a Pure Evoke XT [mains powered] at a bargain price, Currys online prices are far better than those you can obtain 'in store'.

There is also a selection of analogue radios, none of the best buys though. Their products selection is on the left, with Audio & HiFi first, click that, then click Portable Audio, followed by either analogue or digital radio. It is an easy to navigate system which just means you drill down to what you are looking for from the products list.

You can check for more details on digital [DAB], plus, find out whether or not your area is served by digital, by entering your postcode... just go to the official DAB website at... dab.info

Analogue

If you are not concerned about accessing the extra digital stations and just require a reasonably priced model which offers excellent quality sound. Then there are a couple of models which meet these criteria very well.

Obviously the one with more plus points costs more, but, then again, it is far far cheaper than the digital models... it all depends upon what you are looking for.

The most expensive model has an easy tuning system with preset stations, it also boasts a radio alarm and you can preset a timed sleep function. Plus good quality sound.

Another plus is the fact that it is extremely economical in the battery department!

Our second choice also has extremely good sound quality, but does not have so many features... but it is VERY cheap.

Our recommendations follow:

The Panasonic RF3500Y is a brilliant buy; the Sony ICFM770L is our second recommendation. You will have difficulties in finding these models, I couldn't find recommended online suppliers.

You could try getting in touch with http://www.pdograandsons.co.uk [P. Dogra and Sons] where you will find the Sony ICFM770L - the only problem being that they do not state anything about the price of the actual model, whether VAT is included, or detail post and packing charges.
