SATELLITE TV

Satellite TV, PVR's, and the Newest Offers

If you are looking into satellite TV with the changeover to digital in mind... the following summary could help, or at the very least point you in the direction of facilities which can further your knowledge and help you make the right choice to suit your own personal requirements.

The cheapest ways to receive digital are with Freeview or Freesat, which is Sky's satellite TV equivalent of Freeview.

These 'alternatives' require a one-off payment for the equipment which allows you to receive a basic range of digital channels. The other options require a monthly fee.

Tiscali TV offers another option − TV over a broadband line − but availablity is limited. I expect you've seen the advert on TV... it appears to be quite a good offer if you can get it!

There are a wide range of digital service packages available and costs vary widely. Always check out for the newest offers... they want your business!

Sky is now widely advertising its Broadband offer which includes basic Sky with internet Broadband subscription. Why not check out their offer at the following link... Get Sky Digital TV, Broadband, Phone for £26, order online! At present this has been acknowledged as the best combined offer available - so if it's what you are looking for, I'd grab it NOW.

Also available by monthly subscription is Virgin Media.

With the advent of digital TV instead of our normal analogue TV transmission we all need to consider just exactly what programmes we want, or are prepared to pay for.

(What particularly annoys me in regard to Sky [besides a very personal prejudice in regard to the EU and the owner of Sky!] is the fact that you get no choice in whether you want the basic channels, and have to pay extra for the sports. I know I am not alone in not wanting the basic channels - only the sports - and I refuse to pay the inflated price just for that!)

But, ignore my prejudices! To check out what they have on offer click the following link... Sky digital - something for all the family. To learn more visit Sky.com. There are also some special online discounts available... no reason to pay more than absolutely necessary!

Another option which you may not yet have considered is a PVR [personal video recorder]. These machines are on the lines of a Freeview box, only they do SO much more!

Why not read the product specifications at Argos?

Argos

If you type PVR into their search box you'll come up with a choice of fifteen at present. We have a Thompson, a gift, but the TVonics brand I hear comes highly recommended.

To answer your queries on Digital TV there is a not-for-profit organisation leading switchover... access it via telephone on 0845 270 1802, or visit the website at Digital TV... there you can also find out when switchover is due in your area by using the postcode checker.

And incidentally, just as a 'by the way', if you are considering a new TV the best brands to choose are still Sony and Panasonic for quality and reliability. [There are plenty of links to reputable suppliers throughout this website!]
