Tumble Dryers
Tumble Dryers
A few general tips for first time users of tumble dryers are followed by a list of general comments which will be found on all the pages within this laundry section. This is followed by a discussion on the pros and cons of the different types of dryer... then the actual best models are listed, and finally we list the best places on the internet to access these best buy dryers.
Tips for new users...
• Don't put thick towels in with thin lightweight items.
• Put items of similar weights in together... otherwise you could end up with some items improperly dried, whilst others are over dry.
• Don't put too much washing, or too large an item in your machine... the result will be overheating.
Included below are the general comments on this laundry section which have migrated from our 'Washing Machines' page...
[General comments on this laundry section... the size ... or lack of size! ... of your kitchen and/or utility area will probably be the chief influence in your choice of appliances. Modern washing machines now have a far superior spin speed, and, of the ones we recommend, the cheaper model has a 1200 spin speed, the other a 1400 spin speed... so your washing will be fairly reasonable (some items could be about ready to iron) and this, in turn, could affect your other choices.
Could you get away with just airers and a washing line? Or have you considered a dehumidifier?
A Spin Dryer... will work efficiently, and is cheap. The main advantage to it is that it is only the size of a large pedal bin, so it can be stored under the worktop in a small amount of space.
A Tumble Dryer... much more expensive... for a decent quality item you need to pay a quite steep price. They do a good job, but are another full size kitchen appliance to find room for.
A Washer/Dryer... instead of a washing machine... disadvantages, if it goes wrong then you have no back up in either the washing or drying department... and of course being a more complicated piece of machinery, it IS more likely to break down! The only advantage is that it will be a space saving item.]
Pros & Cons
NOTE:- Some tumble dryers are exceedingly inconvenient to use... making emptying the excess water from the condenser a miserable job. All tumble dryers use quite an appreciable amount of energy... you need to choose the most energy efficient model you can afford [all models in our selection are in the better than average category]. Some dryers are worse than average at filling your room with excess damp air.
You have next to decide whether you would prefer a 'vented' or 'condenser' type tumble dryer... and further, whether you would prefer to risk a 'timer' model, or go for a 'sensor' type.
Easiest first... timer or sensor? Although the timer models are cheaper to buy, I think the far superior results and shorter drying times [and possibly cheaper running costs] make this an easy choice to make... I would most definitely go for a sensor model.
Now to vented or condenser... you can rule out vented if you cannot house your tumble dryer near a window or an outside wall. Vented models need to either hang their hoses out through a window, or to have a hole knocked into the outside wall for the exhaust hose to be fitted permanently through... you will need a short straight run from your machine so that fluff cannot block the hose.
How these models work is that they take the damp air from the room and out through this hose, so without a suitable situation for the hose, a vented model is out of the question.
If the vented option is open to you... consider the fact that they are cheaper to buy AND cheaper to run.
Condenser models, on the other hand, can be sited anywhere. They work by condensing the damp from your washing and collecting the water into a special chamber which you must remember to empty on a regular basis. Condenser models are more expensive to buy AND to run.

Reliability... although most brands of tumble dryer are quite reliable if used according to instructions nowadays... one stood out in all tests as well above average, and if you are willing to pay the extra, you can choose the Miele brand which we recommend with total confidence.
Other models which came out well and are cheaper to purchase are included in our list below...
For all types of dryers, look for the brands of Miele, or Bosch; or the Zanussi TC 7103W [white] or TC 7103S [silver].
[I have excluded many brands, some in particular are extremely unreliable... even though they are recognised 'names'. Others have been excluded because I have had bad experiences with the brand... like a tumble dryer going up in smoke!]

Please note there are no prices quoted for our various suppliers. The reasoning behind this is threefold...
• The prices are subject to change on the various websites at any time, so our pricing could be out of date.
• Special offers frequently become available on one or more of the websites.
• Costs for delivery and/or installation vary per item and per website... so you will need to check very carefully which is the best offer available. Delivery times may also affect your buying decision. Some deliver from their warehouses, some items are supplied direct from the manufacturer... these are variables you will need to double-check.
