Vacuum Cleaner Cylinder Models

Reliability... sort the best from the rest

Vacuum Cleaner cylinder models

You have decided that you need a new vacuum cleaner cylinder style, that is your choice, NOT an upright model. Join the club - more cyclinder style vacuums are now sold than uprights.

[This vacuum cleaners section is in three separate parts, one which deals with cylinder cleaners, one on upright cleaners, and the other on mini cleaners... both the handheld and stick types.]

Now, if we decide to eliminate robotic cleaners*, then the price range you are looking at is between just under £30 and somewhere in the region of £300.

[*See bottom of page for a short discussion on robotic cleaners.]

Unlike many appliances, it does not necessarily follow that the most expensive vacuums are in any way the best buys. Neither does it follow that the greater the power the better the cleaner... BUT, on the other hand, if the suction power is too feeble, then it just won't be able to pick up much dirt at all... so you need to make your choice VERY carefully.

Reliability - and the ability of a machine to cope effectively with the job for which they were designed - seem to be the most important buying criteria to me.

If a brand is good at its job, but is forever at the repairers... then I don't feel I can recommend it. I am also taking into consideration the fact that some previously reliable brands are not as good as they were.

[When I first had an automatic washing machine I chose a machine which was extremely cheap, yet was said to be reliable. That first machine lasted many years and gave no trouble throughout its entire lifespan. I therefore chose the same brand for its replacement... that machine didn't last so long and did have to have a repairman visit. I still chose the same brand for another replacement... never again!]

I have had a cheap vacuum cleaner cylinder style made by Bosch for several years now... it replaced a far more expensive upright which was supposed to be able to cope with industrial use... though I don't want to tempt fate, I will say that so far it has been totally trouble-free and efficient. Of all the different vacuums I have owned, both cylinder and upright, I think this has been the cheapest purchase... and the most successful.

It used to be that Hoover was synonymous with Vacuum... so, you were going to hoover your carpets... nowadays I think most people aspire to using Dyson to Vacuum in that same way. BUT, although many people would be willing to recommend their Dyson machines, I'm NOT. If any appliance of mine needs to go to the repairman, or have him visit it... I am NOT happy. Just think of the expense and inconvenience! And I'm afraid Dyson are well below average for reliability, sorry all you fans.

I am mentioning three best buys. All these machines use bags... I know this is a costly extra, but I think in the long run it helps save the filters and makes the machine itself last in a trouble-free condition for much longer.

If you MUST have bagless, and you MUST have Dyson... then please let me point you in the direction of the Dyson DC11 / All Floors (bagless). Not the most expensive Dyson in this category, but a better all-round cleaner than some of its relations.

The three best buys are two by my own personal favourite, Bosch, and one by Miele... a brand which comes out extremely well for reliability.

• Bosch BSG 71810 GB Formula is my first choice a good all-round performer and very reasonably priced.

• Bosch BSG 82000 GB Ergomaxx, slightly more expensive... very efficient cleaner.

• Miele S571... good, reliable, and extremely well priced [normally my only gripe in regard to Miele is the price]!

Where to find these machines amongst my chosen best suppliers...

At 24-7 Electrical... you will find the best value, and best buy Bosch BSG 71810, the Miele S 571, and the Dyson DC 11 / All Floors.

The Co-op Electrical Shop stocks just the Miele S 571.

Argos just has the Dyson DC11 / All Floors.

*The information on Robotic Cleaners which was mentioned above is included here... sorry, but it makes rather sad reading for anyone who was hoping to, at least partially, do away with yet another boring chore! More robotic cleaners are appearing on the heels of the first model... BUT none of them are that good.

In fact when you look at the price, I think the whole performance is rather sad. That said, considering the two of the machines are in the region of £1000, the other is around £250... the cheaper one is no worse than the others at actual cleaning. None of them are very effective... and when you look at the shape of them... and then consider the shape of rooms, it seems rather obvious visually that they cannot clean into the corners.

At present they do not even clean up the dust and dirt in the areas they can reach very effectively... for the present, I would give them a miss, and just hope very fervently that they will improve rapidly and appreciably. They are a brilliant concept not very well realised as yet... a dream for everyone who hates housework, but just a dream at the minute!

Very sad, as their close relations, the robotic lawn mowers are said to be extremely effective!

If you MUST get one NOW... then I would definitely go for the Roomba at somewhere in the region of £250.

Suppliers include... Littlewoods Home Shopping;   Electric Shop which just stocks the more expensive Roomba [the VIP]... BUT they have just taken £50 off the purchase price;  and Argos - remember they offer Free Delivery On All Online Orders Over £150 - [ 2 Roomba models available]... at the site go to 'Household Appliances' then type 'Roomba' into the search box.
