Vacuum Cleaner Upright Models

You have decided that you need a new vacuum cleaner upright model.

[This vacuum cleaners section is in three separate parts, one which deals with cylinder cleaners, one on upright cleaners, and the other on mini cleaners... both the handheld and stick types.]

***
Now, if we decide to eliminate robotic cleaners*, then the price range you are looking at is around £35 to somewhere in the region of £300 plus.

[*See bottom of page for a short discussion on robotic cleaners.]

Unlike many appliances, it does not necessarily follow that the most expensive vacuums are in any way your best buys.

Neither does it follow that the greater the power, the better the cleaner... BUT, on the other hand, if the suction power is too feeble, then it just won't be able to pick up much dirt at all.

You will need to make your choice very, VERY carefully indeed. And, dare I say, upright models don't, on average, last as long as cylinder models!

Reliability - and the ability of a machine to cope effectively with the job for which it was designed - seem to be the most important buying criteria to me.

So if a brand is good at its job, but is forever at the repairers... then I don't feel I can recommend it. I am also taking into consideration the fact that some previously reliable brands are not as good as they were.

[When I first had an automatic washing machine I chose a machine which was extremely cheap, yet was said to be reliable. That first machine lasted many years and gave no trouble throughout its entire lifespan. I therefore chose the same brand for its replacement... that machine didn't last so long and did have to have a repairman visit. I still chose the same brand for another replacement... never again!]

I have had a cheap vacuum cleaner cylinder style made by Bosch for several years now... it replaced a far more expensive upright which was supposed to be able to cope with industrial use... though I don't want to tempt fate, I will say that so far it has been totally trouble-free and efficient. Of all the different vacuums I have owned, both cylinder and upright, I think this has been the cheapest purchase... and the most successful.

It used to be that Hoover was synonymous with vacuum... so, you were going to hoover your carpets... nowadays I think most people aspire to using Dyson to Vacuum in that same way. BUT, although many people would be willing to recommend their Dyson machines, I'm NOT.

If any appliance of mine needs to go to the repairman, or have him visit it... I am definitely NOT happy. Just think of the expense and inconvenience! And I'm afraid Dyson are well below average for reliability, sorry all you fans!

Sorry, but I am just mentioning ONE best buy. Like so many uprights, it is a bagless machine. It is by my own very favourite brand, Bosch... they are just SO reliable, and this vacuum cleaner upright model is by no means expensive either.

If you MUST have bagless, and you MUST have Dyson... then please let me point you in the direction of the Dyson DC07 / Animal (bagless). When it is working... it is brilliant, no other word for it.

Before we get to suppliers for these appliances, just a quick mention regarding accessories. With a vacuum cleaner upright model I think accessories are more important than with a cylinder model. With a cylinder the head and the pipes it is fitted to will reach into most awkward places, and can deal with the stairs too... with an upright model you will need to use your accessories to deal with these jobs.

You need to keep the accessories in a convenient place where they cannot get mislaid, and where they are easily accessible. It is far preferable if a very few accessories can accomplish a multitude of different jobs... this will make it so much easier for the user... YOU.

Suppliers for Vacuum Cleaners Upright...

Littlewoods Home Shopping stock the Bosch model I recommend. They do not list it under its catalogue number, but call it the Bosch 1700 watts bagless upright... Extraxx17.

24-7 Electrical stock both the Bosch BUC 11700 Extraxx17 and the Dyson DC07.

You can also now find the Dyson DC07 at Argos.

*The information on Robotic Cleaners which was mentioned above is included here... sorry, but it makes rather sad reading for anyone who was hoping to, at least partially, do away with yet another boring chore!

More robotic cleaners are appearing on the heels of the first model... BUT none of them are that good.

In fact when you look at the price, I think the whole performance is rather sad.

That said... two of the machines are in the region of £1000, the other is around £250... the cheaper one is no worse than the others at actual cleaning.

None of them are very effective... and when you look at the shape of them... and then consider the shape of rooms, it seems rather obvious that they cannot clean into the corners.

At present they do not even clean up the dust and dirt in the areas they can reach very effectively. For the present, I would give them a miss, and just hope very fervently, that they will improve rapidly, and appreciably.

They are a brilliant concept not very well realised as yet... a dream for everyone who hates housework, but just a dream at the minute!

Very sad, as their close relations, the robotic lawn mowers are said to be extremely effective!

If you MUST get one NOW... then I would definitely go for the Roomba at somewhere in the region of £250.

Suppliers include... Littlewoods Home Shopping; and Argos - remember they offer Free Delivery On All Online Orders Over £150 - [ 2 Roomba models available]... at the site go to 'Household Appliances' then type 'Roomba' into the search box.
