Washer Dryers
...A summary of what is covered within this webpage...
First a short description of what exactly you can expect from a washer dryer, then the general comments on this laundry section, followed by the recommended machines, and a list of suppliers.

What you can reckon on with a washer/dryer is a saving of space, and a saving on the actual purchasing costs. Space saving is their main claim to fame! Also, a good reliable washing machine, and a good reliable tumble dryer, will cost considerably more to purchase than the one washer dryer.
BUT, and this is a large but, if it breaks down... and they are significantly more likely to do so... then all your eggs are in one basket, as it were!
Also, although the washing cycle is good, the drying and rinsing are not as good as with the separate machines.
Another downside is that they will wash approximately twice as much as they will dry.
You therefore have two loads for the dryer from each wash cycle.
There is also a tendency to crease clothes, and drying takes a long time.
One more downside which I think I must mention... you won't be able to find a machine which is 'A' rated for energy efficiency... and now that the cost of energy has rocketed, this is one BIG consideration.
But if space dictates that this is your only choice... see below for our recommendations...
Included below are the general comments on this laundry section which have migrated from our 'Washing Machines' page...
[General comments on this laundry section... the size ... or lack of size! ... of your kitchen and/or utility area will probably be the chief influence in your choice of appliances. Modern washing machines now have a far superior spin speed, and, of the ones we recommend, the cheaper model has a 1200 spin speed, the other a 1400 spin speed... so your washing will be fairly reasonable (some items could be about ready to iron) and this, in turn, could affect your other choices. Could you get away with just airers and a washing line? Or have you considered a dehumidifier?
A Spin Dryer... will work efficiently, is cheap... the main advantage is that it is only the size of a large pedal bin, so can be put away under the worktop in a small space.
A Tumble Dryer... much more expensive for a decent quality item, do a good job, another full size kitchen appliance to find space for.
A Washer/Dryer... instead of a washing machine... disadvantages, if it goes wrong then you have no back up in either the washing or drying department... and of course being a more complicated piece of machinery, it IS more likely to break down! The only advantage is that it will be a space saving item.]
Washer dryers are complicated machines, so, to get one which can do all of the required cycles to a reasonable standard is not easy - if they do some cycles well, they are let down by perhaps, poor drying, or creasing, or their rinsing... something!
When all the above is taken into consideration plus reliability... I can only recommend perhaps two brands, AEG and Zanussi... with maybe Bosch as a further choice because of their general reliability... their 'C' energy rating lets them down in this category.
Suppliers who stock these brands include 24-7 Electrical who stock the only 'A' energy rated machine I was able to locate... the AEG WD16810. They also stock a couple of Bosch washer dryers.
The Co-op Electrical Shop has a AEG L16820 which is energy efficiency 'B', a Zanussi WJD1667, also 'B', and three Bosch, 'C' energy efficiency.
Be-direct have a Zanussi ZWD1681W, which is 'B' rated for energy efficiency.

Please note there are no prices quoted for our various suppliers. The reasoning behind this is threefold...
• The prices are subject to change on the various websites at any time, so our pricing could be out of date.
• Special offers frequently become available on one or more of the websites.
• Costs for delivery and/or installation vary per item and per website... so you will need to check very carefully which is the best offer available. Delivery times may also affect your buying decision. Some deliver from their warehouses, some items are supplied direct from the manufacturer... these are variables you will need to double-check.
