Get the best washing machine for
Reliability and Energy Efficiency

Just a few hints and tips before we proceed to the actual washing machines...

I always leave the door to my washing machine slightly open when it isn't in use... this helps to make the door seal last longer.

Always remember to check that nothing is left in any pockets before you put each item into your machine. Hard items like coins can damage the machine and soft items like tissues will leave all your washing in a furry mess!

[General comments on this laundry section... the size ... or lack of size! ... of your kitchen and/or utility area will probably be the chief influence in your choice of appliances.

Modern washing machines now have a far superior spin speed, and, of the ones we recommend, the cheaper model has a 1200 spin speed, the other a 1400 spin speed... so your washing will be fairly reasonable (some items could be about ready to iron) and this, in turn, could affect your other choices.

Could you get away with just airers and a washing line? Or have you considered the various uses of a dehumidifier?

A Spin Dryer... will work efficiently, is cheap... the main advantage is that it is only the size of a large pedal bin, so can be put away under the worktop in a small space.

A Tumble Dryer... much more expensive for a decent quality item, do a good job, another full size kitchen appliance to find space for.

A Washer/Dryer... instead of a washing machine... disadvantages, if it goes wrong then you have no back up in either the washing or drying department... and of course being a more complicated piece of machinery, it IS more likely to break down! The only advantage is that it will be a space saving item.]

Detergents:-

If you, or any member of your family, has eczema or other skin allergies it is safest to use a non-biological washing powder.

Otherwise, remember that the biological detergents come out best for general cleaning power.

Whether you use powder or tablets will be largely a matter of personal choice... powder is supposed to be more effective... personally I use Ariel tablets.

As to which individual make is best, trials choose Ariel and Persil... with Fairy doing quite well too.


Nowadays washing machines, along with all electrical appliances, are rated for energy efficiency. Please see our page on - Energy Saving - which has links to fascinating websites on the subject. Items are graded from G up to A+, where A+ is the best possible rating.

Bosch is now regarded as one of the best brands for reliability for many products... I know my cheap little Bosch vacuum cleaner has outlasted and out-performed a far more expensive one which preceded it... so I am happily recommending two Bosch machines which come out very well in all the tests which I have read.

The first is the Bosch WFO 2466... it is well rated for energy efficiency, it's main disadvantage is that it is slightly noisy... but if you can shut it up on its own in the kitchen or utility room, the price should keep you very happy. This model has now been superceded by the newer WFO 2467, which is the updated version of the same model.

The second, the Bosch WFX 2867 has more programmes, has a faster spin, and is quieter... its main disadvantage is the price tag of around £100 more than the other model. The Bosch WFX 2868 is the updated version, with extra facilities including a childproof lock... and again it is much quieter.

The machine which I have at present is a Candy, these are good for energy efficiency, but not supposed to be so reliable... that said, and with fingers crossed, I have had no problems with it so far and it is well outside its guarantee period. It is rather noisy, but I just shut the kitchen doors on it, which shuts out the noise and so solves that problem.
